ME N MA GIRLS: Myanmar’s first all girl band

“The band is called Me N Ma Girls, a play on “Myanmar girls.” They are battling conservative parents, a censorship board and boyfriends who think it is outrageous that they go onstage in such skimpy outfits… The notion of an all-girl band is still novel in Myanmar, where the music scene is dominated by men, said Ms. MacLachlan, who is a professor of music at the University of Dayton in Ohio. (One stumbling block for female artists: The notion of unmarried women traveling on musical tours with male band members is taboo, Ms. MacLachlan said.)… All five of the members of Me N Ma Girls have college degrees, in the fields of chemistry, zoology, mathematics, Russian and computer science. The band members, while not overly cerebral, are outspoken and confident… “I’ve NEVER seen girls behave like that, ever,” Ms. MacLachlan said in an e-mail message.
